Jacon Goodness.

Finally got back from Jacon, and boy was it a blast. I think this is going to be a long report.

Thursday:

Arrived at 7:30pm to see Vlad waiting at my gate :) It wasn't long after arriving that I'm at a guest gathering drinking red wine. Suffice to say things had started well. Finally met [livejournal.com profile] stealthhe

Anyway, later that evening we headed off to this LAN place and played for a few hours. Despite being years since playing quake 3 I did admirably well... and then proved to totally suck at battleground 1942. If only we'd have played CS, but it would have been hella unfair ^^

That night I stayed up until 8am and slept until 10 before heading towards the convention :)

Friday:

Got a complimentary pass thanks to [livejournal.com profile] snackpants, who managed to refer to me as a "genius" at least 10 times that weekend ^^;; The MTT amv panel was good fun - what with Hsien looking a little worse for wear :) He finally perked up at the opening ceremony. After Brett DeMoss (sic) and folks were done with the initial presentation it was dddr time.

Videos I want to comment on:

It's a small world - [livejournal.com profile] lostboydv Incredibly awesome, cant wait to see new Lee videos.

Fire - Kitty Senshi, I thought this was better than Jebadia's recent Fire video.

Surfing USA - well done, mttakimbo

Johnny B Goode - Vlad rock n rolls the old school way :)

I Want You Back - dammit [livejournal.com profile] jingoro you need to make more stuff, this was great.

The Bump - OMG Crusher JOE!!!!! This video ruled in so many ways.

Macarena - [livejournal.com profile] quu, this version was much improved over the beta.

Chim Chim Cher-ee - Dave did a wicked job in such short notice.

Mr Bassman - Brad found a killer source movie for this one, nice work.

Night of Fire - [livejournal.com profile] kwasek... such a great idea well executed. Damn you, we had no chance of following that.

Yeah, very impressed with how fun the project was. Well done everyone!

Post-dddr was a staff party to which I was privy to. Much fun ensued. In the room they showed the judges entries for the amv contest and... oh..my... god... I've never seen such a consistently solid set of amvs in my life. This was how I imagined Pro would have been last year. Now, admittedly this is a reduced list that is much less than the full amount but damn there were so many good videos, which I will talk about in more detail later...

Saturday:

The green t-shirt made an appearance, as expected. The morning consisted of food followed by dealers room followed by amv round table. The dealers room was, well, sparse to be honest - not that I really minded all that much as I wasn't there to spend spend spend... but it wasn't much of a step up from a UK con in terms of dealers and about the same in terms of selection.

AMV Round Table was much more fun than I thought it would be - although I found (as has been known to happen in the past) that me, Brad and Vlad would do more than our fair share of talking. I don't know why I'm so talkative on amv panels and not a very "chatty" person. *shrugs* [livejournal.com profile] stealthhe had a moment of glory which I figured I'd mention so he can smile about it to himself again :)

Then there's the contest... Dun DUN DUUUUUNNNNN!!

I have to admit, even though I say so myself, I thought my Metropolis video was awesome on the big screen. It was the first video to be shown and the gorgeous, clear, loud and powerful sound system when the big orchestra comes in with the film footage.... mmmmmm, it was so nice. That song kicks major ass.

I can never get enough of "hmm" so seeing it 5 times this weekend was no bad thing. There were so many great videos. I told myself that I'd use the contest to judge my saikano video to decide if I like it or not. I've decided I still don't think it's all that special, but well... some people seem to like it, given that it won Best of Show. I got a G Gundam box, which isn't exactly the most exciting thing in the world but, hey, beggars can't be choosers. I think the only quibble is that because so many people haven't seen the series, very few understand what the video is actually all about (other than what is superficially apparent).

I also discovered that [livejournal.com profile] grungettarocks was in the process of making her own Last Goodbye video but never completed it in time for Jacon. I really want to see what she can do with the song, though. Oddly enough, another one of the winners was in the same situation - I don't know if [livejournal.com profile] mttakimbo knows but there was someone well-known who had half completed their own Whatever video.

It was interesting to see that this year the amv contest was beyond seating capacity whereas the cosplay was only 2/3rd full.

Post-contest was food then party! Man that place got hot... I wasn't really where all the main fun was happening most of the time as I was attempting to not die. I think the highlight for me that evening was actually talking to [livejournal.com profile] grungettarocks who I'd never actually had much of a conversation with. It was good to see that a few drinks had brought out her sociable side.

Sunday:

Classically lazy day. It was a shame that so many people had to go home on the Sunday, because it's a great day for chilling and reflection. All in all, Jacon turned out to be the great get together that everyone hoped for. Some particularly special things happened at the Sunday meal, involving lots of plotting by various people - it's exciting stuff. Lots more work, but it's all good. It was good being able to talk to jingoro and Brad this time - there's just not enough time at these cons sometimes. Otakon has become quite tempting, but it can't cut into AWA funds - so we'll see.

I've got an awful lot of stuff to do for AWA but it's going to be great. DDR, comedy video, potentially masters video, road to Iron Chef and stuff for the panel. I really want to work on some neat stuff for the panel. I have a few ideas already but I'm going to brainstorm other stuff over the next few weeks. If anyone has any requests, then let me know :P

"Despite being years since playing quake 3 I did admirably well... and then proved to totally suck at battleground 1942. If only we'd have played CS, but it would have been hella unfair ^^"

-You didn't suck that bad at BF1942. Surprisingly you were probably the 2nd best on your team next to [livejournal.com profile] kwasek. I'm guessing it's from your skills in other FPS. Oh and those incidents with you kamikaze-ing with the jeep...hilarity.

As for CStrike...that reminds me...I should talk to Hitori about finding a good server so we can 0wnz j00 :-P

"my saikano video"

-Yup still haven't seen it...I can't believe I didn't give into the temptation when it was being shown some 20 feet away. This show better be good :).

"I got a G Gundam box"

-This better bet your Master's video source :-P

"boy was it a blast"

-Yes it was. Can't wait for Otakon. It was a pleasure meeting you and can't wait to see you again come AWA. Take care!

BOLLOCKS it's not. Send it over here if you don't want it. Sheesh. That's the land of nifty mutant lame Gundam, dammit! ;_;

Haha, requests...
I already gave you a request to follow up your SaiKano video with one to "At least I got Laid" by Spacehog... But I think I actually want to try subjecting myself to the horror of editing again and give that one a go myself. All I have right now to work with are the digisubs, just to see if I can get the hang of it. If I like the way some of the stuff I have in mind plays out, I may need to inquire around to try and get some good footage.

Anyway, Jacon was awesome, and it was good to meet you.

I have to admit, I haven't seen any of it yet - but it didn't instantly interest me in a "wow, I've been sooo meaning to get this" sort of way.

I'm going to watch it as soon as I've got through all of the Nadia that I acquired thanks to [livejournal.com profile] justzabet.

So great to see you again. Thanks so much for the Yellow Tail - I'm not letting Brett open it until he makes pork chops to go with it >:D

I'm SO PISSED at missing your Metropolis video - we arrived from getting water from the green room just as it was ending. ARGH. Ken and I had the "Ian is a damn genius" conversation on the way to Epcot Monday... :-)
