This must be the year for funky samurai awesomeness with both Zatoichi and Samurai Champloo.

Just watched the former and found it thoroughly enjoyable.

But, the real point of this post is to look ten years into the past.

Well firstly a good friend of mine was run over and it was a really hard time that brought a lot of us together. I've never cried so much in my life, she was such a free spirit.

A month later, me and best friend Rob snuck off across the country to Donnington's Monsters of Rock to see Aerosmith and a whole bunch of other bands. Pride and Glory's opening set had a killer version of War Pigs as I almost got crushed by a sea of hair, leather and steel toe-capped boots. In the bridge of Living on the Edge and aeroplane flew overhead as the banned stopped before the reprise and Steven Tyler chased it across the stage. That was pretty cool when I was that old.

Musically I was listening to just about anything but I had an oddly encyclopedic knowledge of rock.

The band I was into the most at the time were local boy The Wildhearts who were a mix of brit rock, punk, cheap trick and harmonies that beatles would have loved in the 60s. Lead singer/songwriter Ginger was quite a poet with some really great lyrics, form the chorus of News of the World (also the name of a tabloid newspaper in England) "'cos we're just wanters not needers, hypocrites and cheaters, this is the news of the world/pseudo-heroes masturbating our egos, this is the news of the world" to the wise relationship commentary in songs like Suckerpunch:

"why I see her face in a million stars, I'm wondering
thought I had good taste 'til I found I'd none at all
nearly did appear as the asshole of the year
and then she strikes...
and now I'm back, the guy I've been, before the idiot sat in"

Would make an interesting Kare Kano video.

So, here's a couple of classic Wildhearts tracks for you form the album Earth vs the Wildhearts:

Track 5, Caffeine Bomb - 4.20mb mp3 - gortesque lyrics here

Track 6, Loveshit - 5.93mb mp3 inspiring cynical lyrics here

heheh, I'd forgotten about this song...

Wow, that's awesome, not in 1994 but at least after '95 when grunge stopped and Jerry Garcia died, I starting seeking an encyclopdic knowledge of music, and had constant wars with my English teacher as to who was better: Yes or Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

But, more on topic, the Wildhearts remind me so much of The Sweet. Though by the sound of it, the Wildhearts wouldn't put on mascara.
