I've been thinking about how I'm going to present my videos in a dvd recently. I haven't made one in a while so I'd like to put one together for the new con season. The question is, what look do I go for this time?

Super-minimalist!

Actually, I guess that falls under "very artsy and obscure-cool-indie"...

A bright red screen invisibly divided into puzzle pieces, and as you highlight each segment, the black puzzle-piece outline appears :P

Why? Because I had this thought once that hell might be being locked in a room and having to put together a giant 10 million piece double-sided jigsaw puzzle where the finished image is just a blanket of cherry red.

I would say go with the retro man.

Retro can look really good and lately its been very underused. I see alot of people going for the high-tech Neo-industrial styles. I just think a retro dvd architect layout would look pretty awesome.

It would be simple, clean, and stand out.

I say you should do a DVD parody.
