Whatever happened to the concept of ramjets... are they still working on developing those? I always used to read that that would be the next big step in air travel.
The problem with using ramjet propulsion on commercial airliners is that the engine requires air to be moving through it at supersonic velocity before you start the thing up, and I don't think anyone has found a good way to solve that problem on something as gargantuan as a 747 or Airbus A3-anything.
I'm not an aerospace engineer, though, so don't take that as fact.
