Due to owning Labyrinth on dvd, I seem to have been tagged for memeage by [livejournal.com profile] elke_tanzer

1. Total number of films I own on DVD/video:

Currently somewhere between 200 and 500 on dvd.... on vhs... damn, no idea - they are stored in vast quantities.

2. The last film I bought (DVD):

I just got hold of the Angel Guts boxset. Not the kind of movies I'd show my parents, admittedly, but they look pretty interesting.

3. The last film I watched:

Into the Mirror. Very dissapointing, particularly as I'm a fan of the lead actor. The premise stank of late 80s/early 90s b-grade hollywood concept horror/thriller and it had a really inept script. It's an idea movie with a pretty bad idea compouned by poor direction and a really dumbfounding ending. If you want good korean horror go and watch Tale of Two Sisters or Sorum.

4. Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me:

Singing In the Rain - I cannot rewatch this movie too many times... I mean, I can hardly stop looking at this icon let alone the whole movie :)

Dazed and Confused - this reminds me so much of my own teenage years. I regularly get some beers and check this one out... and yes, I know it stars my most hated actor of all time but he's appropriately cast as a total dick with really bad hair who gets his kicks whacking little boy ass.

The Dark Crystal - I have very fond recollections of my parents renting me this movie when I was very little. I have subsequently been told that I used to request it over and over again.

My Neighbour Totoro - Nothing in this world is as pure as this film and nobody before or since has captured childhood imagination quite so brilliantly as seen in this movie.

Switchblade Sisters - Simply the greatest 70s-girl-gang-does-Othello film ever :D Highly entertaining and rewatchable.

5. The very last VHS video I bought, probably the last I'll buy:

I don't recall the very last I bought but I'm very tempted to buy the US vhs of It's Always Fair Weather because it doesn't look like it will ever see a dvd release and dammit I want to see that movie!

And who do I tag in this ever-perpetuating meme? Anyone who has one of my 'fond' films on dvd.

You have THAT many DVD's? O_O How big is your house? :P

I own like 5-10 but I'm really really picky.

Yes and yes and yes. And well put. Even after dazzling works like Spirited Away, Totoro remains my favorite Miyazaki movie for its utter clarity and truth.

Hey! Are you a SF & F fan as well as anime? Are you going to the Glasgow Worldcon? Because they're premiering Howl's Moving Castle there.

OH MAN. I had no idea they were showing Howl there. Fuck. I wasn't planning on going but now.....

I've been really holding out for a good cinema showing of that movie and dammit that sounds like a great opportunity. I was kinda hoping there would be a london showing (nearer me in Oxford) at some point. I was lucky enough to see the Miyazaki festival at the Barbican a few years back and there's nothing like seeing Miyazaki flicks on the big screen.

Well, thanks for letting me know :D

Aw. Now I get to use my other appropriate icon! *eg*

Details on the screening are here. It sounds like they're showing the English-language version, in case that has any bearing on your decision. (Sorry if I'm sounding like a snob, but I really loved it when the arthouse here in The Hague showed Spirited Away subtitled. Foreign movies are always subtitled here, so it made sense, and I like hearing the Japanese even if I understand about 1 word in 5 million.)

Wow, a Miyazaki festival? That must have been cool. I've never seen any of the other movies on the big screen.

Hmmmm. Subtitled would be preferred - mostly because Ghibli tend to have really superb voice talent. Well, it's stuff to ponder - thanks for the heads up!

Oh wait, I missed this part:

>I know it stars my most hated actor of all time but he's appropriately cast as a total dick with really bad hair who gets his kicks whacking little boy ass.

From a guy who owns Gigli on DVD, that's a pretty bold statement!
