Vividcon 2005 first thoughts and overall reaction

Overall, a really wonderful convention. The small amount of people led to a much more intimate convention experience than I am used to but I am totally fine with that. I felt really welcomed by everyone and had a great time meeting some really cool, interesting and just plain awesome people. I was constantly in great company and so many people I'd never met or spoken to made an effort to invite me into conversation. You people kick ass.

Yeah, it totally rocked in every way possible. The vids were fucking amazing. I was going to try and make a rec list but it's currently so damn long that I'm not sure where to start! I actually feel really sorry for anyone not at the con, not only because they missed the vidding high-point of the year but also because they are going to have a nightmare of a job finding and watching all of these really awesome videos.

I felt my stuff went well. The Anime Vidshow wasn't a huge attendance (which is fair enough... given the option I'd have been at the aesthetics panel too) but the vids went down very well. My aim was to offer a broader variety of genres and artistic attempts than most of the people at the show would be used to seeing from anime vids. I'm going to make posts in [livejournal.com profile] vividcon about my vidshow and my panel with links and downloadable stuff and yeah.

My DVDs shifted well – 60 were taken by hungry vidders, which is cool. I'm going to post the vid I had in the Premieres show later today. I find it funny that before the con I was dissapointed in myself for having such a shallow trivial video in the show but the reaction to it (both positive and negative) was really great and I felt I'd succeeded with what the video intended to do. Of course, I don't mean that I intended to offend anyone with it but I did know that to make a video which emphasises the comic-book aesthetics of exploitation cinema I'd have to accept the fact that the exploitative nature of the content would provoke strong reactions. Deservedly so and I'm cool with that. If it didn't – it wouldn't be a video about exploitation cinema. There is a time for a video which is a more clear critique of the genre but it's not this video.

I think I've managed to get over the downer of all the goodbyes (including the ones I missed – [livejournal.com profile] permetaform and [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa, I'm sorry I never caught you before you left. It was really great meeting you.) I'm focusing on what I'm wanting to do for next year. I'm going to hopefully become somewhat more prolific – it's been a very light year for me but I'm filled with ideas now so hopefully I can get back on track. Write the reports and get working on my next vid. That's the goal for me.

Ok, my brain is too fried for anything else right now. I'm sitting in Dublin airport waiting for my Heathrow connection and my body clock is fucked beyond recognition. Time to obsessively check my Flist and hope that I can reorganise my thoughts for more detailed posts later.

Thank you so much, in advance, for putting up information about your Anime Vidshow. I so very much missed attending the con this year; I was really, really looking forward to seeing everyone and the fabulous vids!

As usual I've been collecting everything I see about the con into a memories category... it's "vividcon 2005".

[identity profile] absolutedestiny.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
and thank YOU so much for maintinaing your memories lists. I've found them invaluable during the last few weeks when preparing for my own panel... not to mention being one of the places that allowed me to find vividcon reports last year that enticed me to go to the con!

So sorry you couldn't make it but keep up the great work collecting the memories and hopefully I'll see you there next year!

I'm so glad you had a good time. It was wonderful meeting you, and I'm hopeful that you'll make it a tradition. I was lucky to have had plenty of opportunity to watch the Anime vidshow ahead of time, and enjoyed the variety a lot, but I'm really sorry that a migraine-of-death prevented me from making it to your panel -- I was really looking forward to that. I heard it was fantastic. Any chance that you might post some of your notes or thoughts about it, when you've had a chance to recover from the trip?

I can't wait to see what you come up with in the coming year. Also, your LKBV needs to be shared. ;-)

I was thrilled to see your AMV show, and I really enjoyed the commentary afterward. The range of imagination and creativity in the anime vids really, well -- it was just amazing. I have shown the Revenge vid to several friends back here who have also loved it!

Thanks so much for frying your brain... !

The pleasure was all mine! Thanks!

Lists and more Lists

I started a list of song of the premiering vids (to help with the hunting and tracking and watching of vids). Par Avion is doing the Club Vivid vids. I am hopefuly someone will do the same for the LKBV (whish I missed).

It was *awesome* to meet you and to spend time with you. I really hope you come back, and I'm so glad we have struck up a good chatty friendship. Plus, we need to work on more Lord King Bad Vids starring Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and their doomed love!

Wasn't it good? (oh so good!)

Wasn't it fine? (oh so fine!)

It was lovely to meet you, although I'm not sure if you ever got my name. I was the third person in the hotel lobby yesterday, discussing the potential marriage of LKBvids and musical theater with [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh and [livejournal.com profile] renenet.

Ack! We dragged you off before you got to say goodbye to everyone? I am so sorry!

*waves of guilt*

It was very nice to meet you and I'm very glad we didn't scare you away.

Don't worry - I didn't know if they'd left already at that point.

It was so much fun meeting you!

Thanks so much for being there and bringing your wonderful vids, brains, and humor to share with us. It was really great to meet you in person, and I hope we get to see you again next year.

Cannot shake the image of Christopher Walken dancing through Mordor. Heeeee.

It was wonderful to meet you, and I really hope you will be returning to Vividcon year after year. As someone who adores exploitation films, your vid was a high point of the con this year. I loved your vidshow, and had a wonderful time hanging out on Sunday night. Oh, and in case all our faces are a blur for you right now, I'm Zen, the one with the pigtails.

[identity profile] absolutedestiny.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
As if I'd forget you, Zen :D It was really great meeting you! Feel free to prod me for movie recs any time in the future :)

It was such a pleasure to meet you! I'm glad you're planning to return next year.

(And I showed a friend "IWIWAL" tonight, and she almost died laughing. :-)

[identity profile] absolutedestiny.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
and so it spreads :)

It was great meeting you! It's wonderful to see how VVC keeps changing and evolving and part of that was seeing more and more anime vids and the anime aesthetic on live-action vids. Yay! I hope the rest of your trip home goes smoothly.

[identity profile] absolutedestiny.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I got back fine! Things are certainly getting interesting... I think next year will see some really off-the-wall videos being made that will blow everyone's minds. It was great meeting you, see you next year!

It was good to see you again -- and I'm so glad you enjoyed the con! Your panel was great, I'm looking forward to watching your DVD once my life calms down a bit, and I covet that red tie you were wearing at Club Vivid. Sharp. *g*
