Time for the first part of my image meme. Click any of the thumbnails to see a larger image (although even the larger images are scaled down versions of the originals)
So, that's all the photos for now. Next one in a couple of days!
Let's start with breakfast - seems like a good place to begin.
sweetestdrain was wondering, so here's what I've been having recently:

English muffins and Blueberry Jam. Despite it's "no added sugar" claims, this jam is very tasty - they use fruit juice instead of adding sugar.
Incidentally, we don't distinguish between English Muffins and Muffins over here, it's all contextual. Suffice to say if you are having a choc-chip mufffin in the UK it wont be toasted.

After devouring my breakfast, it was time to begin my photo taking quest. This one was an easy find:
This lovely cat can be found every day sitting ontop of the cars on Allam Street, basking in the sun.
She only pretends to be ferocious.
Actually she's a total darling and will let anyone pet her... she's also quite loopy and can be frequenly found rolling around in the leaves on the pavement.
Awwww. I'll try and see if I can get some dogs on my next outing.

So, my next stop was to wander the streets and alleyways of central and north Oxford looking for interesting graffiti for
gambitt.
Nothing side-splittingly funny but a lot of different stuff. First of all, there's the messages:
"FUCK OFF PAEDOPHILES" - pretty clear and to the point, really. What I find funny about this social outcry is the position of it, it's only about 3 feet off the ground so the only people who could read this at eye-level would be little kids.
Maybe it's targeted at some creeps from Braesnose glaring upskirts from the eerie grate below....

Though really, you'd expect to find a more intellectual message in Oxford, wouldn't you?
"Capitalism is boring"... well, I suppose that's a slight improvement. Nice touch using natural materials to write it as well.
I'm not sure Exeter college would approve, though.
The chavs can't match it either. I wouldn't say Celebrations sucks, it's perfect for oversized inflatable champagne bottles, but I admit it's not what I'd call "funny".
The final message of the day leads us to the next section of our trip through Oxford's graffiti... "Decorate Don't Deface".
Truer words have rarely been spoken. And, in an attempt to make more decorative graffiti, the kids and bored adults of the town have resorted to the use of stencils for their designs.
The first time I saw stencilled graffiti was years and years ago as an undergraduate. A little while before the movie 12 Monkeys came out, these patterns appeared all over town. There aren't that many still around now but this one is still visible in the passage leading to The Turf Tavern.
Whether it was some clever viral marketing or just the actions of a very organised fan I'll never know.
This movie memorabilia, however, hasn't been around since Julie Andrews won her Oscar.
(Mary is also to be found in that same alleyway)
Famous figures are very popular. In fact, I was hoping to grab quite a lot of Bush Bashing, but unfortunately the majority of it is to be found in East Oxford which was a little out of my way today.
I did find lots of these though. None of them used massively creatively but they are fun nonetheless.
I always imagine him with a bit ? hovering over him, actually.

These ones on the right are interesting but I wouldn't want to go into what message they are really trying to convey.
The kids do have some fun stencils. I bet I could do better though...
Where I've been looking there really isnt a lot of graffiti around, my part of town is pretty clean so you have to really dig around for seculded areas that have been painted on.

This door proved interesting, in addition to the Jesus Saves message there is this really cute pair of music guys at the bottom right.

What's more, right above it is this great Yamaha Keyboard!! I love it. I sorta want the music dudes to be next to the keyboard. That would be great.
The final stencil is this interesting brand by "the gimp" which I find very suspicious.

I think "the gimp" is also viral marketing.
Check out the font and the hat and then have a look at this photo of a bizzarre store/art/funky_crap/hair place round the corner:

Coincidence? I think not.
Maybe cowboymod emporium will get a visit from the retail store commentator "shithole"

That would be fun :)

Date: 2006-09-08 09:53 pm (UTC)That gave me an interesting idea -- guerilla marketing for Free Software projects. Inkscape's done that with T-shirts, but the concept needs to be applied on a wider scale.
My todo list just grew a bit longer :)
What camera is that?

I've only had the camera a day so I'm still getting used to it a little and I'm certainly not an experienced photographer but I've been very happy with some of the photos so far and I've seen excellent things from this camera by others, so I have hope :)
