DVD Writer Experiments

OK, so I got me a new NEC ND-1300A DVD writer on the assumption that if DVD+R was ever going to become cheaper than -R then it would be nice to be able to pick and chose my media.

Yes, I know that this drive at the moment has a limited amount of useable brands (it says no to PRINCO) but most website reviews found it to be a reasonable multiformat writer for the price.

My tests weren't 100% perfect....

Ritek G04 4x media
- burning at 4x, DVD writes in 15mins but data after the 4gig mark has errors
- burning at 2x, fewer errors but still present

Verbatim 2x media
- burning at 2x, no errors everything good.


So, it seems that if I want the advantage of 4x (at least with this media and this firmware) I can't really burn more than 4 gig on a dvd. This means that for my amv DVD I'm either going to have to keep the image below 4 gig or use flashy 2x media.

The errors after the 4GB mark are solely due to the fact that Ritek media is shit. It's a common problem, according to the plethora of posts I've read on doom9.org. If you use, say, Verbatim or Maxell media, you should have no problem burning DVDs over 4GB.

In fact, even the "good" Riteks will probably stop working in time.

I agree with jbone...I use Verbatim and Sony DVD-/+R's exclusively and have had no errors yet. Then again my drive is different.

Forgot to reply about...AMV DVD eh? So these will have all your vids in their Mpeg-2 glory and nice little menus? I must get one :).

Nothing flashy about Verbatim. Yes, it's expensive, but It Just Works - especially for DVD-R.
