You get to rename yourself anything you want.
I'm not fond of my name. I always thought Ian and Roberts are good names but not together. If I had the choice it would be either
Mark, Martin, Matthew or something else beginning with M for the surname Roberts. M Roberts names all sound good.
Ian Coulthard (pronounced Coal-thard) which is my mother's maiden name.
Damn, this song would make a great light-hearted AMV. I can picture it now - even the strange bridge (where the character would have kidnapped the girl in his imagination).
Shame there's no animation that fits the idea exactly - as usual.
1997 was such a good year for ska. This is a "classic" new ska/punk album - That Lonely Place is such a great pick-me-up song. sweet ska.

What band did you travel 500 miles to see?

Date: 2003-02-13 08:18 am (UTC)It was a good year for ska/punk what with RBF and goldfinger making a big impression on the scene. Turn the Radio Off and Hang Ups were key albums in my musical tastes at the time and pointed a little to how the ska/punk scene was goig to develop. With hindsight it was pretty obvious from much further back, but the atlantic gap was pretty big musically at the time.
Being in the UK at the time nobody was listening to anything with horns in it. It was very much still a metal and britpop country in terms of non-electronica teen culture music. Fishbone and Sublime had never existed in the UK so we weren't in any way ready for ska. I remember being called a weirdo for ordering ska/punk stuff from the states. I remember getting a shipment which included Turn the Radio Off, Hang-Ups and 40 oz to freedom. I was happy to be a weirdo that day :)
To think of how popular the genre is in this country now it's almost crazy to think that I had to get Less Than Jake albums from the states a few years back. I'd like to think that I helped bring it over a little though, my friend Rob was a DJ at a rock club. After a few weeks of them telling us to stop playing that crap they were skanking away like nobody's buisness.
As for the band I went 500 miles to see, well it was probably more. One summer in the late 90s we went to london to see Kiss reunited in makeup supported by rage against the machine, fear factory etc etc. Unfortunately it was the same time as Alice Cooper was diong his first UK tour in about 10 years so we had to see him too so after seeing Kiss and co in london we travelled up to Machester to see Alice :D It was worth it though, as he was great ^_^
So, trip to london about 250 miles then to machester about the same and another 100 miles or so back home afterwards. It's only strange circumstances that I managed to go 500 miles in the UK - usually the furthest I used to go for gigs was london.
