I saw it with my college anime club back in '97. The first few episodes, I was like, "Wtf is this?"
Then it got amazingly fucking intense...and then petered out again. It picked up a little again by the end. I liked the series in general, but it could have been a lot shorter.
That's exactly how I felt about it...and funny that you saw it in your anime college club, because it was the same for me. Sadly mine was a year later...it would've been eerie though :-P.
IIRC the show picked up in the teens, got really good up until like 30-something and then they were on this island for a long time and it sucked. Then it got good again...oh and the scene with the giant King status was funny...with balls and everything...(why do I remember this?)
